In English, Year 1 have been learning how to write instructions. We explored bossy verbs and the key features of instructional writing. Using ingredients to make a jam sandwich, the children had to tell us exactly how to make it. They quickly learned that being specific is important, otherwise the whole loaf of bread might end up on the plate, the butter could be spread on the table, or the entire block of butter placed on the bread! They had great fun and produced some fantastic writing!

In Science, Year 1 have been learning about different materials and their properties. They have enjoyed carrying out a range of experiments, making predictions about what they think will happen before testing their ideas and observing the results. The children have explored which materials and objects floated or sank, and last week they had great fun investigating the absorbency of a variety of materials.
